Sway is wonderfully positioned a few miles inland from the south coast and is in the New Forest National Park. It has a population of about 3400 spread over a fairly wide area, though the heart of the village is clearly defined. We have an excellent primary school of 210 pupils, a doctor’s surgery, garage, two pubs, hotel, a general store, butchers, newsagent and post office, plus estate agents and a photographer. The village benefits from having a very strong and caring community spirit.
As well as certain groups that care particularly for the elderly and isolated there are a wide range of other groups catering for people’s interests, including many varied sports activities (we have an excellent sports ground) drama and dancing. Annual village events include a week long carnival, pancake races, boules competition and a bi-annual Open Gardens (last time 1000 people visited the village). Probably the main recreational activities for villagers are walking and cycling in the beautiful New Forest that surrounds us and many people own dogs here!
The towns of Lymington and New Milton are both about 5 miles away and provide a reasonable range of shops and supermarkets. There is a limited public bus service to Lymington but we are fortunate in that the main London to Bournemouth railway line goes through Sway allowing us good train access to London and Bournemouth.
Secondary Schools – there are two very good secondary schools; 'Priestlands' in Lymington; and Highcliffe School in Highcliffe, both of which serve Sway families. Free buses are provided to both schools. Similarly there is a large Sixth form college, Brockenhurst College, situated 4 miles away in the neighbouring village.
